John Woolfe was one of motor racing’s great characters throughout the 1960s. A driver with considerable talent and boundless enthusiasm, he drove an eclectic range of cars throughout his career, from Top Fuel dragsters to sports prototypes. Woolfe is most associated with the Porsche 917, a car which in its early days was considered extremely difficult to handle by the marque’s works drivers. Tragically, Woolfe would lose his life while driving a 917 on the opening lap of the 1969 Le Mans 24 Hours. John Woolfe Racing continued after its founder’s death, and remains active to this day in the UK drag racing and custom car scene. Award winning author Ian Wagstaff provides a fascinating insight into Woolfe’s career, with input from several people who knew him. Co-author Dave Riswick was Woolfe’s business partner and his memories also feature throughout. In addition, the book is liberally illustrated with many rare images, including a large selection from Porsche’s archive.
